Never forget what proper lifting technique entails

Depending on your profession, you may spend a good portion of your day lifting heavy items. For example, movers and construction workers are often tasked with this responsibility.

Even if you feel up to the task, you should never lose sight of the fact that proper lifting technique is a must. If you make one mistake when lifting, it could lead to a serious injury that requires immediate medical attention.

Here are some important steps to take in regard to your lifting technique:

  • Start in a safe position, as an awkward start increases the risk of injury
  • Maintain the natural curve in your lower back as you lift the item
  • Lift with your legs, not with your back
  • Squat to pick up the item, as opposed to kneeling
  • Don’t twist and/or turn when carrying a heavy item

The problem with proper lifting technique is that you may soon forget what you should and shouldn’t be doing.

For example, you work as a mover and your entire day is full of lifting heavy items. Since you’re so used to doing this safely, you begin to forget about maintaining your technique.

If you’re injured during a lift, put the item down and stay where you are. You don’t want to continue forward, as holding the item any longer could worsen your injury.

Once you receive medical attention, you’ll better understand what went wrong and what type of treatment is required in the future.

If you’re unable to return to work, consider filing a claim for workers’ compensation benefits. The money you receive can help you financially as you attempt to make a full recovery.
