Ladder accidents happen for many reasons

Depending on your job responsibilities, using a ladder may be a big part of your day. In fact, you may find yourself on a ladder and working at heights more than on the ground.

There are many causes of ladder accidents that you need to keep in mind every time you use this type of equipment. Here are four risks to watch out for:

  • Missing the last step: When climbing down, pay close attention to where you are in proximity to the ground. If you miss the last step, you could land awkwardly and suffer an injury.

  • Neglecting to maintain three points of contact: You must always maintain three points of contact on the ladder, as neglecting to do so greatly increases the risk of an accident.

  • Using the wrong size ladder for the job: For example, if you need an extension ladder you shouldn’t attempt to use a portable one. The wrong size ladder can cause you to make movements that increase your risk of an accident.

  • Forgetting to place the ladder on level and firm ground: This may seem like common sense, but some people overlook the importance of doing it as they become more confident in their work.

If you are involved in an accident while using a ladder, you should assume that you require medical attention. Along with calling for help, don’t forget to notify your employer of what went wrong.

If your medical team tells you to take time away from work, don’t go against their wishes. Instead, file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits so you can receive some financial assistance as you recover.
