Legends of the Fall – The Workers’ Compensation Section Approaching the Autumnal Equinox

It inevitably happens. You turn the calendar to August wondering… “Where did the summer go?” Then you think about how much you miss all of the seminars, activities and outings that the Workers’ Compensation Section offered you the previous year and then again has in store for you during the upcoming bar year. Just in case that wasn’t in your thought process, let me help you focus as to where our calendar is pointing early fall:

I. Executive Committee Meeting – Wednesday, September 1, 2014:

Ok, it’s not glitz or glamor. But somebody has to do the dirty work. And when you put 35 appointees, a pair of young lawyers and a bunch of astute Emeritus members in one room, some serious work gets done.

II. 16th Annual Verrilli-Belkin Workers’ Compensation Charity Golf Event – Monday, September 15, 2014:

Hope you have saved a couple of good shots for one more round of golf at Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington, CT. The event is always well-attended, blessed with great weather and a great time not only for golf but for networking with attorneys, Commissioners and staff. (Please consider a sponsorship this year – all for great charitable causes).

III. Compensation Review Board Road Show – Friday, September 26, 2014

As part of our “bridge the gap” initiative with the Young Lawyers Section, the Chairman has agreed to take the Compensation Review Board on the road (literally down the street) to the Legislative Office Building (Room 2C) for oral argument. The panel, consisting of the Chairman and two Commissioners, will the arguments of at the spacious confines in the LOB in an effort to provide young attorneys a front row seat to the oral argument process and to allow more experienced attorneys an opportunity to recall and refresh their legal skills in this area. The Commissioners will also provide details about submission of briefs and related appeal issues before the CRB. Please join us as there are some interesting and significant cases to be heard on the docket that morning that could affect your practice.

IV. Continuing Legal Education Seminar – Friday, October 17, 2014

The CLE Committee has received a commitment from The Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute and the Spine Institute of CT to present anatomy, physiology and case studies related to the hip, knee, shoulder and spine at a full day seminar at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford. The presentation, which will be headed by Dr. Steven Schutzer and includes participation by eight orthopedists, will provide great medical insight for our members and ensure several hours of continuing legal education credit for attendees.

V. New Workers’ Compensation Section Page – Connecticut Bar Association Website

The Bar Association has already unveiled its new look website. If you haven’t done so already, please take a look at it and familiarize yourself with the layout. Our Section’s updated link is as follows: https://ctbar.site-ym.com/?WorkersCompensation

Our Technology and Website Committee will be hard at work this year to update the page as needed and to keep you informed.

Now you are ready. The sunblock is safely secured for next year. Your fall calendar is stacked. Maybe you can find your favorite adjuster to obtain some settlement authority. The leaves are about to turn in glorious, resplendent New England style. Look forward to being a part of it with you…

Author’s Note:  Lawrence Morizio is the Chair of the Connecticut Bar Association’s Workers’ Compensation Section.
